GOOD VINEYARD PRACTICES AT SCHALKENBOSCH WINE ESTATE
One of our proudest achievements at Schalkenbosch is the fact that we try to work as closely together with Mother Nature as possible in crafting our wines.
We can keep the use of chemicals against harmful pests and weeds in our vineyards to a minimum, because:
1) The cold nights and hot days makes it difficult for any funguses to grow on the vines;
2) The constant mountain breeze that blows on the farm keeps away most pests and diseases and keeps the vines dry; and
3) We are isolated from other vineyards lower down in the valley where there are higher concentrations of pests and diseases.
On average the rest of the SA Wine Industry generally makes use of more chemicals than us, because the wine farms elsewhere is closer together and the spreading of pests, diseases and seeds are easier.
We also adhere to a program called the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW), enforced by the South African Wine and Spiritus Board. This program allows you to only use environmental friendly products in your vineyards. We also achieved Membership status from the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), endorsed by South Africa’s wine export body – Wines of South Africa (WOSA). We are currently in the process of achieving Championship status from BWI.
All this together makes our wines healthier to enjoy.
